Until a few weeks ago I had never heard of this game. I've always really liked top down 2d space trading games. I grew up playing Escape Velocity and I recently started playing it's clone Endless Sky.
I was looking around for something new in this vein to play and came across Starsector. It's kind of an oddball game and hard to compare, but it is incredibly deep. It has similar campaign mechanics to Mount & Blade, but the combat is like a more tactical version of Escape Velocity or SPAZ. You can fully customize your fleet, control and individual ship, and in a recent update manage colonies.
The game is amazing, but something even more remarkable is that it has been being worked on slowly and consistently for 8 years now. The devs still claim that it is in beta, and they keep putting out periodic releases. It seems there is basically no marketing, all sales go through their website (you buy a key). It seems to be surviving entirely on word of mouth, and keeping hype down. Which is probably a really smart idea in todays gaming hype, letdown, backlash cycle.
Highly recommend checking this one out if you are into this kind of thing.
Anyone else know of hidden gems like this that are hard to find?
