I don't know why, but Google decided to celebrate Malaysia's unofficial national food, "nasi lemak", with a doodle inspired by the dish.
If you were to come to Malaysia and ask a local to recommend a breakfast dish to you, it's 99% likely they'd suggest nasi lemak. That's how popular the dish is. Coincidentally, I actually had nasi lemak this morning for breakfast!
Food is built into the DNA of Malaysia. Whenever we meet friends or family, food must always be on the table. If you're meeting a colleague or client for a meeting somewhere public, chances are it'll be over a meal.
We (my faculty) once hosted some dental exam training event kind of thing (I can't remember exactly what it was), and one of our foreign guests was shocked at one of our cultural practices. If we ever organise a day-long event, it must start with morning refreshments, we provide lunch, and it'll end with some light refreshments for tea. She said we eat too much. Which is probably true, but we wouldn't have it any other way.
Food is important to Malaysians, which is why we get super excited when other people celebrate it.
If any of you come to Malaysia, try our local food. You won't regret it.
