Being on the road and going through 6 different countries in the next 3 months as we make our way back to NZ I'm fairly concerned about this one.
Meanwhile, I sometimes observe an anti-vaccine group on Facebook with huge traffic and membership. The theory there is Bill Gates, WHO, big pharma and Netflix coordinated to create and publicize this.
Netflix is a new one to be blamed on.
It's the new series Pandemic at Netflix.
I live near (and retired from)the University of Illinois, we have one of the largest Chinese student populations in the country and everyone has recently returned to campus from the winter break. There are some pretty significant concerns about the virus here, things like the huge Chinese New Year celebrations have been cancelled, and the local EMS is ramping up to respond if it spreads.
Hope the virologists can come up with something that will help worldwide.
Still trying to confirm this—the original source was in Chinese—but breaking reports are that the Mayor of Wuhan said 5 MILLION people left Wuhan for Chinese New Year. See below image.
The city’s medical workers were in dire need of more protective suits, according to Wang Jiangping, vice minister of industry and information technology. Wuhan is going through 100,000 single-use suits a day, he said. China’s factories, operating at 40% capacity because of the holiday, can produce only 30,000 a day.
He said the government had purchased enough suits from abroad to serve Wuhan’s needs for two more days.
Welcome to Cake, Mickie! 🎂 I'm really sorry about the worry your Chinese students have. Oh my God, I can't imagine if an outbreak like this was happening, much less in holiday times, among my relatives. I'm going hiking with 3 Chinese immigrants this afternoon in California and I'm sure this will come up.
Speaking of California...
Thanks for the welcome, Chris.
I feel bad for those who have family in or near Wuhan, they’re so worried and so far from home.
Started watching Episode One of Pandemic. A few notes to share.
A hundred years ago, over 100 million people were infected with the influenza virus. Towns were so overrun by deaths that they often buried the dead in mass graves.
The combinations of Hs and Ns in the name define the physical characteristics an influenza virus will have and just how deadly that infection might be.
A pandemic influenza will likely come from an animal and we won’t have a natural immunity to it.
Dr. Jake Glanville is working to create the world’s first universal flu vaccine.
It’s surprising how little we still know for sure about this outbreak. For example, we’re still not sure whether it is contagious before symptoms arrive. SARS and Ebola wasn’t.
To me it feels like it’s spreading fast, but to put it in perspective, 36,000 patients die each year from the common flu.
I don’t have a point of reference to know if it is spreading fast. Is it faster than SARS spread after the same amount of time had elapsed? But it definitely is scary to see cases in California and around the globe.
Mongolia has gone on lockdown:
Mongolia closes its border with China, shuts down schools, and bans public gatherings in an effort to prevent coronavirus. (Source)
Yeah, at this point, there's too much we don't know so I'm holding off on the panic.
(r0 - average number of secondary cases that are generated from a primary case, the main indicator of the contagion capability of a particular virus)
The number of known cases has increased by 60 percent overnight.
China said confirmed cases had increased to 4,515, and that 106 people had died. The youngest case is a 9-month-old girl in Beijing
As one who is learning Chinese, my heart goes out to China right now. I really hope they can curb this thing. Just awful.
This Coronavirus is creating all sorts of problems for scientists...
Fascinating article about what to do if you’re a doctor and the patient answers yes to being exposed to the virus in some way and having a temperature: leave the room immediately, close the door behind you, and leave the patient in it.
British Airways halts all flights to China mainland.
Yeah, this is getting pretty wild
This short documentary filmed in China gives a sense of what living with the virus is like there. Slam dunk doesn’t even need the subtitles.
A significant number of airlines are now stopping some or all of their services to China.
I'm watching this unfold on Facebook and it's unimaginable to me:
👆 I dunno why Bloomberg links don't expand.
We deal with a number of businesses in China today we got notification that factories in Dongguan have been ordered by the local provincial government to delay re-opening after Chineses New Year by one week.
Instead of opening on the 3rd of Feb they have been told to contact all workers and tell them not to return until the 10th at this stage, with further delays possible.
Japan has confirmed three passengers on board their first evacuation flight from Wuhan, China are infected w/ the Coronavirus.
Other than the three returnees tested positive for the new coronavirus, several cases have been confirmed within Japan, mostly tourists from Wuhan.
Japan is on high alert to prevent the virus from spreading through human-to-human contact.
A tour bus driver and a guide with no recent history of traveling to China were found to have been infected with the virus this week, in what could be the first cases of human-to-human transmission in Japan.
A bit of context to keep in mind:
