    • shooting into the sun

    • Snapped this morning using iPhone. I know it breaks the rules but, for a snapshot, it turned out ok. iPhone technology helped a lot by automagically using hdr, which helped a lot. It's not a pulitzer prize winner but I like it.

      Do the serious photogs here always abide by the guidelines / rules of photography or do you ignore them, would be nice to see photos that turned out well after contravening the "how to take a nice photo" rules:

    • I'm not a "serious photog", but I've gotten some great photos by shooting into the sun (only briefly, of course, so as not to damage the camera). Here's one I took a few years ago in Sunriver, Oregon.

      When it comes to photography technique, I feel like the ends justify the means. If you get a great photo, I don't think it really matters how many technical rules you broke.

    • It's incredible how Apple gets such good photos out of that flat little camera. And Ryan, that's a great shot.

      I shoot into the sun all the time because I love the look and with how good cameras have become, you can. A few years ago we hired Dallas Nagata White, the great fashion photographer, to shoot our family. She placed them right in front of the sun. I took a few shots with my camera and I wondered how she was doing this without any kind of fill light. Wouldn't they be hopelessly silhouetted against the bright sun?

    • Well, that's how my shots looked. 👆 Hers, on the other hand, oh my God. Maybe we can get her into this conversation to explain how she did it.

    • I love shooting into the sun for portraits. It's the signature look I prefer. The rule for me is layering the sun slightly behind something like a tree branch to break it up so the flare on the lens is not as intense. The other rule is that there needs to be something behind me that is reflecting light back onto their faces so either open space or white wall or something that can bounce light back in. I hope that helps!

    • Wow. Is there some fill flash going on? Maybe the camera's sensor just has enough dynamic range to pull that off in post?

    • Meter for the background but with fill flash? Your composition is better Chris in my opinion, too much rock and not enough of that sky in the other shot. Looks really heavy where you would think light but strong would be the intent based on the dramatic background and soft squishy love subjects  💙
