I would be amused if other motorcycles were enduro or sportbikes.
Aww c'mon - a couple of KLR's is pretty close!
official 'Sturgis in on' Press Release
There ain't nothing more American than Sturgis motorcycle rally, what's not to like, hmm? Surely you ought to have a similar event in Oz.
Its a typo - it should say Sturgis 'is' on.
The amusing bit for me is that there are two KRL 650s behind the two Harleys riding in - almost under the sign welcoming Harley riders.
And no - there isn't anything of that relative scale here. We have/had HOG events but they might get 500 these days. 1000 in their heyday. I've covered them for work plenty.
But generally if I'm not working I find crowds and crowded places onerous.
And I'm much too crusty to find dancing girls interesting.
We could troll each other to no end, and honestly I really enjoy it. The Pinot Grigio really helped last night.. haha.. And respect that you can do what you do for a living, and the cruisers are a big part of it. But hey, watching a beautiful body never hurt anyone, young or old. The chopper herd mentality however - not so much enjoyable for me. In fact I never ride with anyone, I prefer the liberty and serenity of my own.

When you were pubescent, the mere hint of a bra strap could send you into ecstasy. I’m 57 now. If it’s not two nuns and a mule, I can’t even watch it.
Although the article is not about it.
Crowds seen at motorcycle rally raise fears of super spreader event
It seems like a pretty effective superspreader event to me. Older guys who don’t take precautions who then spread out across the nation.
I have heard the actual attendance is lower than even conservative forecasts, tho.

New Hampshire governor requiring masks at Laconia Bike Week:
Then, there's the possibility (in some regions....) for college football - in many of those same areas that are continuing to struggle with this.
The challenges continue....
Its starting.
Once again, science prevails.
🤦♂️
Don't you oppress me! Freedom ... liberty ... my right to .... cough ... splutter ... gathe ....................
The projections are we could save 70,000 lives in the next 3 months just with masks. And think of all the permanent heart, lung, and kidney disease we could save.
Outbreaks in 3 states are already linked to Sturgis. Is this just an American thing?

Which part - the congregating, or the general feeling of a certain percentage of our fellow citizens that'll do whatever the heck they want?
Is this just an American thing?
From the outside looking in ... yes.
You are more political and the division and rancour along party lines is deeper. Stoked by the Cheeto-in-charge.
That's resulted in things like masks and gatherings being made into a quasi-political statement rather than a health issue.
We have those dickheads here too, but the leadership has been more bi-partisan and coherent and the populous is nowhere near as overtly political - or religious - so it's not as big an issue.
Not very clear wording on my part. I live in an extended family of ragers about masks, gatherings, and the environment and I’m hoping this is mostly confined to America — that we somehow lost our minds.
We had California’s oldest State Park, a place I loved (Big Basin Redwoods), burn to the ground yesterday and we had to listen to our family rage that it was those damned California liberal environmentalists’ fault.
Chris, that's awful about the park.
I hope you are safe.
I hope Kevin won’t mind me posting his extraordinary photo of Big Basin burning:
That's an amazing shot - but one that I wish he didn't have the opportunity to take.

😢
I've been there. More than a decade ago, I baked in a stop in that region as a sanity check. My wife and I had done car trips, but our first bike trip of that kind of length meant a bit of evaluation of how we were both feeling before heading further north along CA-1.
I've probably been there 200 times, riding my bike, running, hiking, camping... It was extraordinary.
I actually read a book on the history of saving some of the redwoods and sequoias from the big tree gold rush of the 1800s in California. Fascinating. One of the environmental groups slipped the Sequoia National Park legislation in the last few pages of the Yosemite legislation during the last hour or two of the senate's session so the senators didn't notice and thus we got Sequoia.
Each year we do a 50K run through Big Basin. Here's a photo I took last year of two of our family members:
We wandered along CA-236...
Being reasonably new to moto-touring, I didn't take many photos on that part of the trip.
We made it to Eureka/Arcata, before needing three days to get home so we could go back to work.
...
Anyway...backing away from the tangent, I saw this earlier:
They're using cell phone tracing technology to figure out where people ended up...over 60% of counties in the US had attendees in Meade County, SD
😲
