    • Hi,

I'm about 10 posts in but only just realised there is an 'introductions' topic and it would probably be a good place to say hi.

I'm John, new to Cake (obviously) but found it during a hunt through 'alternative' social media for a blog post I'm writing. 95% of the sites and networks that I found were either really ugly, really empty, overly complex or just filled with the kind of people who have got themselves banned from most mainstream social media for being assholes. In fact so far Cake is the only one that has inspired me to stick around for a while.

I've done a lot of different things and lived in several different countries. Currently living in Lithuania, but actually in Mexico at the moment because this is where I happened to be when Covid happened.

I'm passionate about, among other things, sustainability and technology. I'm the co-founder of an ethical and sustainable web hosting company called S4 (hence the username) where our aim is to make the internet as Sustainable, Speedy, Secure & Stable as possible.

Together with my wife we also have recently started publishing a free monthly newsletter about sustainability issues, we published the first one last month which very few people downloaded or looked at, but we have some more contributors this month (though we are looking for more) and hope it will grow.

I'm sure there must be something else interesting I could say about something, but I am really very bad at these kind of introduction things, so I'll leave it here.

Looking forward to engaging about interesting stuff on Cake!

    • Welcome, John. I’ve loved all your posts so far and anyone who is for sustainability gets a virtual high five from me.

S4 looks really cool. I didn’t know about the amazing data center in Helsinki. By crazy coincidence, I bought Wordpress hosting last week from SiteGround, not knowing about you. I haven’t configured anything yet except pointing my GoDaddy-registered (yuck) domain to their DNS servers. Somebody was suggesting I check out Ghost before getting too committed.

I’d love to read your sustainability newsletter you wrote with your wife. Linky? (Heh. Almost typo’d kinky. Glad I caught that.)

Mexico!? Where? I was almost stuck in Costa Rica when the outbreak happened. Tough duty that would have been. 😎

    • HI Chris

S4 looks really cool. I didn’t know about the amazing data center in Helsinki.

Thanks a lot, it's a new company so it's a challenge to attract clients, people want stability in web hosting understandably. We've actually been doing this for different clients for a long time though, just not as a formal web hosting company. I wasn't sure what the form was here with self-publicity so didn't post a link, but if anyone else is interested in sustainable hosting then take a look, we are at https://s-4.host

I bought Wordpress hosting last week from SiteGround, not knowing about you.

SiteGround is a decent choice, I've heard some people complain about them recently but I think a lot of it unjustified, just watch out for their price jumps after the first year!

But, if whatever you are creating is a pure blog then I'd say Ghost is a great way to go, It's trickier to find sensibly priced Ghost hosting than it is to find managed WP hosting (but watch that word managed, it could mean anything), because servers need to have node.js installed. We have been working on adding Ghost hosting to what we do, and we are now pretty happy with it, we haven't updated our site to mention it yet, but it's good to go :-)

I’d love to read your sustainability newsletter you wrote with your wife. Linky?

I may have upped myself slightly here... my wife has written and I have mostly put up a website and proofread the first issue (at least in English), I'm a bit more involved in the second which will be out in the next week or so, and we have a couple of other new contributors too. It's very much a work in progress, and some of the topics are maybe a bit vague and broad in the first one, but we will get there.

      It's here: https://platformaeko.com/towards-sustainability/.

Mexico!? Where? I was almost stuck in Costa Rica when the outbreak happened.

Well only just in Mexico really, we are in Tijuana at the moment but should be back to Europe in the next couple of weeks. We could have been stuck in San Diego but we'd already been in the States for a while and reached the end of our ESTA, also it's cheaper to stay here and the tacos are better.

P.S. Kinky would be a whole different kind of newsletter I think

    • Yeah, just a blog for me with an about page. I'll check out Ghost in the next few days and let you know. Ready to take on your first Ghost hosting customer if I go that way?

    • Welcome to Cake @S4-John!

      I really appreciate your comment:

I hope you'll stick around to have interesting conversations together!

    • Welcome. Post some stuff about sustainability. I’d also like to hear about some of your travel experiences. How about covid perspectives in Mexico? Travel pictures are cool. Looking forward to hearing more from you. Have a good one.

    • I'll check out Ghost in the next few days and let you know.

@Chris Curious if you had a chance to take a look at Ghost?

Not (just) because we would love to host a site for you, but actually I'm really interested in what people think of it compared to WordPress (or other blogging platforms). I've been playing around with Ghost a lot in the last few weeks and just like it more and more.

    • You know, I had already bought hosting for Wordpress and paid for Elementor and then thought “wait, my first YouTube episode is ready to publish, better get my blog fast.” So I dove into Wordpress and discovered it would take time and deserves the time to do it right.

I was somewhat frustrated by the learning curve, so then I thought huh, maybe it’s worth checking out Ghost. I remember being impressed with the cursory investigation I did. Do I really need anything but a blog anyway?

And then I thought “hold on. The objective is to get views and subscribers on YouTube. Is spending time on the blog the right thing to do right now?”

So, long story short, I decided to focus on getting a few more YouTube episodes out before circling back to the blog.

    • That sounds like a pretty sensible plan of action, I've been meaning to check out your YouTube channel for days now and will actually manage it sometime soon!

When you do circle back to blog, we are just setting up a ghost demo site for people to play with. If you want to fiddle with it at any time then let me know and I'll send you a login.
