    • Absolutely fantastic two weeks of tennis at the US Open! It had a weird beginning with Novak Djokovic's bizarre disqualification, but in the end, the storylines proved to be more about the winners of the event, as is appropriate.

In the women's final, Naomi Osaka defeated Victoria Azarenka 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Osaka became the first woman to lose the first set and still win the US Open final since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario defeated Steffi Graf 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the 1994 final. This is Osaka's third grand slam title and her second US Open title.

As for Azarenka, this was her first trip to a grand slam final since the 2013 US Open. She too was gunning for her third grand slam title. Her two titles come at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013. So, it's been a while for Azarenka since she's been a contender at a grand slam.

In the men's final, Dominic Thiem defeated Alexander Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6. This is Thiem's first grand slam title and his fourth trip to a grand slam final, so the fourth time was the charm for him. Thiem is the first player in the Open era to come back from 0-2 to win a US Open final and the first since Pancho Gonzalez defeated Ted Schroeder 16-18, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, and 6-4 in the 1949 final. So, history was made in the men's final as well.

As for Zverev, he has to feel pretty good considering that this was his first trip to a grand slam final. At 23 years of age, he's four years younger than the 27 year old Thiem, so he has more opportunities ahead. It obviously stings for him to lose this match, but I have no doubt that he'll be back.

great recap, thank you! I'm not sure why but I just haven't been able to get it going to watch sports again including football yesterday but will see if I can get into the French Open. Would love to see a week one recap like this when it starts!
