I can't believe we're already at the end of season 1! You can see my previous recap of episode 7 below.
"Myfanwy and Farrier quickly discover how dangerous life is outside of the Checquy, while Grantchester runs out of options. Myfanwy chooses between her freedom and Farrier's life."
OK, jumping right in!
The episode begins with Myfanwy in a coffee shop, meeting up with Bronwyn surreptitiously. Bronwyn says that all that matters now is that we’re here, together - even though Myfanwy is frustrated that it took so long for Farrier to come clean.
Apparently Myfanwy will be met by a driver in Calais after she takes a ferry to France, and then she’ll be met by Bronwyn at the safe house in Bruges.
“If you get caught, I will get you out again” says Bronwyn. Myfanwy says the Checquy will never stop looking for her: Bronwyn says she has nothing to fear, and that it’s only a matter of time before the nightmare is over, promising to see her tomorrow night in Bruges. She makes Myfanwy promise to be there. Myfanwy doesn’t respond.
We then cut to an open field by the white cliffs of the Dover coast. The Dover Ferry Terminal. Myfanwy prepares to board the ferry and go through security.
She’s flagged by security to go through her bag: and she makes it. She starts thinking of Gestalt, Farrier, Grantchester while she waits and has to steel her nerve.
She’s then kidnapped as she exits the bathroom.
We then cut to a researcher working with bees, dissecting one under the microscope, putting it in a centrifuge, then extracting a blue substance from it and putting it in a syringe in a briefcase.
The syringe is then handed to a woman with the instructions of there being 10 doses for the journey.
Gestalt is leaving Monica after their tryst. Monica tells him to leave and not come back.
Grantchester says he wants the court meeting set for 8:30 every day, and wants a revised budget. Pointing to the various media outlets streaming on TVs in his office, he’s presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - uniting all agencies under one roof.
Promising increased efficiencies - and power greater than Mi5.
Then Jennifer comes in and says that the Checquy organization is under investigation and may even be broken apart.
“The situation with Linda has tipped the scales” she tells him. “When you gained this office, you lost the power to define your own reality.” He has to come to terms with that.
A van drives up a remote road to a guarded building. Inside that van, inside a cage, is Myfanwy - and they’re about to inject her with the blue syringe substance - Apamin - a custom sedative made from bee venom.
She wakes up in a guard room and meets the mysterious Sophia, who explains that she was sedated by Apamin. Myfanwy finds out that a neurotoxin in bee venom actually negates her EVA powers - and the Chequy lied to her.
Sophia then leaves her in isolation.
Iris gets a call from Monica, who asks her for a favor: the address to New Glengrove, where she’ll be this afternoon. Then Gestalt shows up.
One of Gestalt's units asks if Myfanwy is going to be in today - and discover a card addressed to them in the mail. They open the letter to them from Myfanwy.
“The spark I feel with you is real, but I need to figure out who I am away from the people who knew me as I was” says Myfanwy.
Gestalt says “Drawbridge protocol: now.” They need to intercept her anywhere she might escape.
Grantchester stops by Farrier’s cell. He promises her release if she keeps the secrets of the agency: a pension, a full security detail, as long as she signs the act he’s presenting her. But it’s too late.
The review is already underway - on the way to a full shutdown - and Myfanwy is MIA. Grantchester has “stepped into a difficult role.” But Farrier says that he has to stop the review RIGHT now. She signs the form - and says that it’s up to him to see the Checquy together, as it’s the only family some of their agents will ever have. He has to fight the battles ahead.
Sophia goes back into Myfanwy’s cell. A variety of EVAs are displayed to the screen with a list of their abilities and prices.
Myfanwy is next on the list. She’s labeled “Electricae” - a level 8 EVA of transdermal neurotransmission, with bids starting at 10 million pounds.
