YouTube Unleashed a Conspiracy Theory Boom. Can It Be Contained? (Published 2019)
What if stemming the tide of misinformation on YouTube means punishing some of its biggest stars?
www.nytimes.com
I do believe that the large social media sites are largely to blame for this, as they have acted to amplify and validate some of the worst actors and have been an incredible source of leads for extremists looking for people vulnerable to radicalization.
But there are larger questions to be asked, like why are people actually believing these things? Is it because we're putting people in bubbles that reinforce these false narratives which seem to be from independent sources? We used to have a "fairness doctrine" that demanded equal time for opposing views, now opposing views means you have to treat falsehoods as if they are equal to truth.
Is it education? Or simply entertainment that goes too far, there are no doubt still people who believe professional wrestling is real right?
Also...
But if you pass legislation that says that after recommending something 1,000 times, the platform is liable for this content, I guarantee the problem will be solved very fast
What an amazingly great idea!
Completely unrelated but it's in the folder.
Worth a repost:
Also unrelated ... but damn.
This thread made my day!!! LOL ๐
On a serious note, it's amazing the power of what we want to be true. That's what fuels so many of these conspiracy theories.
