    • Home Alone and Home Alone 2 have become classic holiday movies. While there is a heartwarming holiday message at the end of each, what the movies are most known for are the traps that Kevin McCallister sets up for Marv and Harry. As a kid, I didn’t fully appreciate just how dangerous these traps actually are. As an adult, I’m like “I know Marv and Harry are bad, but damn, Kevin! Aren’t you going overboard at least a bit with some of these traps?”

In case it has been a while since you’ve seen these movies, below is a quick breakdown of the traps that each guy endures in order of when they happen.

      Home Alone

Marv: Shot by a BB gun in the forehead. Slips and falls down icy steps. Crowbar falls on his head after slipping again trying to open the door. Takes an iron to the face that was falling for a good 20-25 feet. Steps on a nail with his left bare foot. Slips and falls again. Steps on Christmas ornaments (the ones he steps on in real life were made of sugar, so they didn’t actually hurt). Slips on toy cars. Takes a paint can to the face. Trips on a wire. Has a tarantula placed on his face. Takes a crowbar to his body after whacking Harry with a crowbar. Swings into a brick wall on a wire that was cut by Kevin. Takes a snow shovel to the face from the old guy. Gets arrested.

Harry: Shot by a BB gun in the groin area. Slips and falls on his back while going up icy steps. Falls again on icy steps. This time landing on his neck before tumbling into the snow. Burns his right hand on a doorknob heated by a hot iron. Head gets burned by a blow torch before dipping it in the freezing snow. Gets covered in feathers after having his face covered in a sticky glue like substance. Slips on toy cars. Takes a paint can to the face. Trips on a wire. Takes a crowbar to his gut when Marv tries to kill the tarantula. Swings into a brick wall on a wire that was cut by Kevin. Takes a snow shovel to the face from the old guy. Gets arrested.

      Home Alone 2

Marv: Takes one brick to the face coming from the top of a tall building. Takes another brick to the face from the top of a tall building. Takes another brick to the face. Takes another brick to the face. Gets shot by a staple gun in the rear end. Takes another staple to the groin before taking another staple in his nose. Falls 20+feet into a hole once entering the home (which is under construction). Slips on slime and into a case of paint cans, which fall on his head. Gets electrocuted for 20+ seconds as the voltage gets increased before eventually being switched off. Has a bag of cement powder (looks like flour, but I believe it’s cement powder) fall on his head from 30+ feet up. Gets hit by a big iron tube. Has the big iron tube fall on him from 20+ feet up. Gets pressed against a wall after a tool chest falls down the stairs and into the door that he’s standing on the opposite side of. Falls 30+ feet after going down a rope that was lit on fire and soaked in kerosene. Gets attacked by a swarm of pigeons. Gets arrested.

Harry: Slips and falls on his back when trying to jump onto a ladder that was covered in slime. Has a bag of tools unzip and fall onto his head. Has his head set on fire by a blow torch. Dips his flaming head into a toilet filled with lighter fluid. Has a ladder break as he tries to climb it. Falls face down on the ladder into the ground.

To call these traps “dangerous” is an understatement. They’re life-threatening. Each one would do great damage to a person and many of them would kill someone even if they were the only trap. The bricks to the face, dipping your flaming head into a toilet bowl with lighter fluid, and even having a bunch of tools fall on your head would probably kill you or leave you fighting for your life in the ER. That’s just three traps! The fact that Marv and Harry survive them and are still walking means they are either superhuman or they’re fictional characters in a fictional movie, lol.

What I find most hilarious, especially in Home Alone 2, is Marv and Harry still find a way to maintain a somewhat positive attitude as they continue to get tortured by Kevin and his gnarly traps. It’s like, why don’t you guys just give up?

One other cool thing is that if you know where to pause (right after Harry trips over the wire in Home Alone), you can see their stunt doubles. Another place where you see it is when Kevin is on the handlebars going across the tree house. If you pause the movie, you can see his stunt double taking his place. The wig is a dead giveaway. But once again, you gotta pause at the right moments.

Anyways, with it being the holidays and Home Alone being a classic holiday franchise, I thought it would be fun to have a discussion on this. Are you a fan of the movies? If so, which set of traps are your favorites? Which guys in the end got it the worst? I think Harry got it worse in Home Alone, but Marv got it worse in Home Alone 2. My favorite trap is probably the tool chest.

    • I don't know if you've had the chance to see THE MOVIES THAT MADE US on Netflix yet, but they do an episode focused on all the behind-the-scenes of making HOME ALONE.

The stunt-people made it look easy, but those stunts were absolutely bonkers.
