This question is sparked by another conversation - although different enough to warrant its own post. I don't want to hijack the other discussion:
What if 'Oumuamua really is an artificial object, a solar sail of extraterrestrial origin?
I perfectly understand that this is the unlikeliest explanation for this object - and I don't want to sensationalize as the other conversation put it - but still, this question occurred to me for two different reasons:
First, the science guy in me has the idea that, if we list potential scenarios for a solar sail to exist and fly through our solar system in the first place, we could check if 'Oumuamua's behaviour is even compatible with that. Is it a visit to our system, or is the object just passing through? If we are the destination, what would happen next - for example if this was an act of directed panspermia? If we are just a stop along the way, and this was some sort of fly-by maneuver, what would be the object's destination, and what could be its goal?
Second, the science fiction fan in me would love to see an interesting story evolve from this. Who sent this object, and why? Considering that this object literally takes ages to go from there to here and back, would these beings even expect to hear back from a hypothetical probe?
