If you wanted a break from coronavirus news and wanted to read something more cuddly and comforting, this is not the post for you. Apparently, there’s a small, very small chance. Let me repeat: A very small chance, that a rogue star passing by our solar system could knock Earth off its orbit and send it hurdling into the vast unknowns of outer space, ending life as we know it.
This is one of the craziest things I’ve come across. The good news is the odds of it happening are astronomically low. It hasn’t happened in the last 4 billion years and quite honestly almost certainly won’t happen in any foreseeable lifetime. Still, it’s an uncomfortable little reminder that beyond our planet is a wild, dangerous place we like to call “outer space.” It’s also a reminder that as dangerous as things seem to be getting here on Earth, it’s much better we are here than anywhere else.
