About a month ago, I moderated a panel on athletes recovering from a serious injury.
Unfortunately, mobility during recovery can be limited. And some leg injuries can have long-term range of motion issues. Originally, the step-through frame was designed to accommodate female riders wearing skirts.
However, the additional advantages over the diamond frame is that the rider doesn’t have to lift a leg over the frame to ride it. Which can be the difference between being able to ride again or allowing the bike to collect dust in the garage.
The criticisms I’ve come across with the step-through frame include that it is much heavier, it provides fewer options for bottle and gear storage, and the flexible frame reduces both life of frame and peddle efficiency.
