The University of California system along with Harvard and MIT are suing the federal government over a threat from ICE that international students cannot keep their visas if colleges go to 100% remote learning in the fall. It’s no shock that they are suing as there are over one million international students in the U.S., who generate $45B in income for the schools via tuition, books, etc.
It seems like the Trump administration is doing this to force schools to open before they feel ready, but it looks like the schools are fighting back. Stanford professor Michael McFaul tweeted he is willing to teach an in-person class to international students at Stanford’s football stadium to subvert this order if necessary:
“To subvert Trump’s evil edict, I’m volunteering to teach a course @Stanford in our football stadium “in person” for ALL of our international students. Possible topics: “Irrational ICE Policies” or “Explaining the Erosion of American Democratic Institutions in the Trump Era.”
Should be interesting to see how this battle goes. I think Trump is going to lose this one, but we’ll see.
