Canon EOS with a Canon 300mm zoom. For some of the bird photos, I would have liked a bigger zoom, but I'm glad I didn't have to carry one around. Also, there are weight limitations going into TRC, so you don't want to carry too much stuff.
As for dangers or close calls. Nothing involving animals or people. Felt very safe the entire time in Peru. However, I did get terribly ill with a parasitic amoebic infection (most likely picked up in the Amazon, but not 100% sure of this), which caught up to me several days later after 3 days of hiking around Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu and Hauyna Picchu and ended up in the hospital in Cusco on an IV for 6 hours and spent the rest of trip eating chicken soup instead of enjoying the wonderful Peruvian cuisine.
