Up until 1975, the BBC’s practice was to reuse tapes of original broadcasts. In part this was pragmatic: actor contracts in the 1950s only allowed one or two airings of what was typically a live program broadcast. Only 57 of 253 episodes of Doctor Who. Fascinating article on how all but 97 were eventually found and why episodes of Monty Python’s Flying Circus didn’t get erased.
