Personally, I think we could all use a little humor right now and so I took the liberty to come up with an April Fool’s Day prank over at GoldenBearReport.com, where I cover Cal hoops. On our message boards, I threw out the wild suggestion that Cal basketball should start recruiting heavily in Ireland. A bunch of people took the bait and said I was crazy for suggesting such an idea, that Ireland was no good at basketball, etc.
I replied back by saying that Ireland was better at hoops than they thought, citing their 86-66 win over Gibraltar to take 3rd place at the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries in 2018 (which actually happened).
Eventually, one person caught on that I was trolling them, which at that point I congratulated them for realizing it was a joke. Nobody was offended and everyone got a pretty good laugh. Had things progressed further, I would have elaborated more on how good I felt Ireland’s AAU basketball scene is. AAU is basically where top players go to compete on a club team.
A good name for the top Irish AAU league I think would be the Guinness Flight League. Possible AAU team names: Dublin Elite, Cork Magic, Shannon Shamrocks, and Limerick Lucky Charms. If you know AAU hoops, the first two names would make sense as would the league name. A lot of AAU leagues and teams use terms like “flight” since it alludes to dunking.
Anyways, I had fun with it and was wondering if anyone else saw a clever April Fool’s Day prank or came up with one. Obviously, pranks related to COVID-19 are not funny and should not be done. But I think something light and humorous that can get our minds off of it is a good thing.
