    • With Bill Gates, Larry Brilliant, South Korea and China saying it’s all about the testing, my heart lept when I the headlines.

But then I got to articles like that. ☝️ Sigh. I guess our government just ordered 500,000 tests from Italy and other companies are promising higher capacities sometime in April. How did the Chinese and Koreans move so fast?

    • Why can’t the US do this?! SEVEN MINUTES!

      (H/t to @JazliAziz)

And you don’t have to show symptoms to be able to get tested. Early detection, what a novel concept.

      🤦‍♂️

      Anthony Fauci:

The system does not — is not really geared to what we need right now, what you are asking for. That is a failing. The idea of anybody getting it easily, the way people in other countries are doing it, we're not set up for that.

      Ashish Jha:

Well, of course, Dr. Tony Fauci is right. It has been a failing.

And what your viewers need to understand is, if you get sick tomorrow with coronavirus, and you reach out to your doctor or you talk to your doctor, and your doctor wants to test you for coronavirus, he or she can't.

Most doctors today cannot test people for coronavirus, because we just don't have the tests. Every other major country has figured out how to do it. South Korea is testing 15,000 people a day.

Across the European Union, people are getting tests. Even Iran and Vietnam are testing more regularly than we are. We have just managed to bungle this so incredibly badly that most Americans cannot get the test they need.

    • one word: incompetence

The leader of the US would rather be lazy and believe wild conspiracies, outright lies, and innuendo than to do the WORK to find the truth and base his decisions on that.

Apparently, the govt has to “allow” local labs to pursue their own testing protocols, and that permission was only granted to Utah very recently after much begging. Utah was probably granted permission because, “who cares about Utah?” We now have local labs doing local testing. Heaven help you who are located in CA, the home of Trump’s greatest enemy, who was previously married to Tump Jr’s girlfriend. It’s all personal with Trump. That’s his shortcut past the work of learning the truth. Florida, a swing state, is getting 100% of its requests from the government while states that don’t matter in the election are being jerked around. It is appalling incompetence and amorality.

What a shitfest this has turned out to be. The sad thing is there are SO MANY ways this could and should have been avoided. Especially after soooooo many warning signs and actual past experiences.

(Super angry right now because I just learned of the first Covid-19 death among my extended family.)

Can you please share a link to where you found out the above information?

And damn, I’m so sorry for the death in your family from the virus and the government’s mishandling of it, @lidja.

    • Just read the article and I saw no mention of California. Some states apparently waited to submit requests: your comparison chart of Kentucky and Tennessee comes to mind. Other states like Florida, which has experience filing for emergency funds due to frequent hurricanes, submitted their claims sooner. But the article says that even Florida received a significant amount of expired equipment.

My conclusion from the article, based on the evidence presented, is that Trump’s foot dragging, as well as expired equipment from 2007, was the cause of states not getting the medical supplies they need.

But nowhere in the article did the CT Mirror provide credible evidence that Trump was playing favorites as far as which state got supplies and equipment.

The system appears to roughly conform to states’ populations, rather than the size of their requests. Florida, a state of 21 million, got all 180,000 N95 masks it wanted. Oregon, a state of 4 million, only received 40,000 of the 400,000 masks it requested, and New Jersey, a state of 9 million, got 85,000 of the 2.9 million masks it feels it needs.

However, I would not be surprised or shocked, unfortunately, if Trump was playing favorites on some level.

    • I think Trump is so used to playing “the art of the deal” that there is no room in his psyche to even perceive anything other than tit-for-tat, advantages v disadvantages, and leverage.

His outrageous response to the reporter who asked him how he would calm people’s fears about the pandemic is, unfortunately, more revealing of his vast shortcomings than informative on any level.

Sorry, but I am totally in RANT mode and can barely hold a civilized conversation right now.

    • IMO, the key to understanding Trump’s response to the reporter is the reporter prefaced the question by reporting numbers that make us look bad. They appeared to be true but bad.

Fauci is more skilled. He finds a way to get the truth out there without making us look bad.

Cuomo seems to be becoming a star for getting accurate numbers out, and Fauci for getting accurate science out, so maybe Trump will see that and begin to adapt? One thing’s for sure: as we test more, the numbers are gonna go up and Trump won’t like them. He thought they would go to zero quickly.

Really sorry about the death in your extended family. 😢 I think I know people who have it, but how can you know in the absence of testing?

    • Fauci's disappearance frightens me.

Either Trump doesn't understand or he doesn't care about people. If Fauci's disappearance was engineered by Trump it is appalling.

I was very concerned about Trump leaning towards reopening the country but I feel calmer when I think that since all shutdowns or stay at home orders were issued by governors and mayors that they should be the controls in stating when things can return to normal.
