I read through The Changeling by Victor LaValle in a little less than a day and a half.
The book has incredible endorsements: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times • USA Today • The New York Public Library • NPR • BuzzFeed • Kirkus Reviews • Book Riot
It's not quite the urban fantasy that one might expect, although it is categorized as Contemporary Fantasy. Continually twisting and turning, set in New York City, the book follows the story of Apollo, a rare book seller and new father who finds his family falling apart catastrophically. With nothing left to lose, Apollo looks for answers, for his wife and child, and uncovers an ancient and dark secret lurking both in plain sight and then deep within the biggest park in New York City.
Hint: the internet is involved.
What is real and what is imagined? The book continually pushes and pulls you between the two extremes, and you find yourself questioning the motivations of even the closest characters that you feel you may know. Highly recommended.
