I'll be honest: I love candy, especially sour candy. A bag of Sockerbit sour gummies used to be one of my favorite things, but now as I try to make healthier choices, I'm trying to avoid eating my favorite movie theater concessions.
But on my recent trip to Portland, I saw some colorful candy bags proudly proclaiming 3 grams of sugar - per bag of candy - and had to learn more. What were these mysterious candies?
They were SmartSweets, and they promised the following: At SmartSweets we’ve innovated the first candy that kicks sugar—naturally. Our promise to you: free from added sugar, sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners. Every ingredient we use is non-GMO, always real and never artificial. Feel good about candy!
It's almost too good to be true: each bag of SmartSweets has 28 grams of natural fiber - which is an extraordinary amount. SmartSweets are sweetened with stevia, not sugar alcohols, aka what makes Haribo Sugar-Free Gummy Bears known as "hell bears" for their unpleasant side effects.
So how do these wonderful candies taste?
While there are several varieties of SmartSweets - including Sweet Fish, Fruity Gummy Bears, Sour Gummy Bears, Peach Rings and Sour Blast Buddies - I ended up getting a bag of Sour Blast Buddies and Peach Rings to try to review.
