Interesting developments here in Aus.
Personally - after Google threatened to pull their search facility in Aus over this I jumped ship anyway. Been using Duckduckgo for a few days and there's no difference. See ya G!

Does Duckduckgo pay for news?
good point - more about getting away from ‘reliance’ on google than being happy for Rupert though.
I guess the idea is Google is making money off smaller news agencies without paying their fair share? Seems like a reasonable request. Though of course, don’t many smaller news outlets also get a boost from Google’s search engines? Seems like a compromise should be in order, no? Or am I missing something?
You're not missing anything, the issue is that Australia is working to pass a law that dictates the deal instead of allowing Google and the industry to find their own compromise.
So Google successfully negotiated a deal with major news outlets. Facebook simply blocked them.
Including Facebook pages with content from the owner's magazine or organisation.
Most disliked person in the country is now Zuckerberg by a considerable margin. Other countries look like piling in.
Personally it has no effect on me. I'm not a big user, other's are badly impacted. I am somewhat enjoying the hatin' on FB though.
It would be slightly ironic - or even hypocritical to share this link if I didn't already pay for a Brisbane Times subscription.
The Duckduck isn't as good as Google either. Not nearly as comprehensive.
They had been seeking compromise for quite some time - unsuccessfully. That Rupert seems to be the main beneficiary is unfortunate - other smaller organisations will benefit though.
Many people seem to tolerate it, but I don't think it'll ever be as comprehensive or as powerful as Google Search.
