    • Here's something about Cake I'm still trying to figure out: if I have a long-form article that I want to write on my own web site, is there a good way to tie that to Cake and vice-versa? I can always create a post here and link to my web site, but that seems too low-fi. I could duplicate the first couple paragraphs of my blog post and then "read more at [link]" but that somehow seems un-Cake-like.

On my site, I can add a "discuss this post on Cake at [link]," which is also lo-fi because you have to follow the link to even see if there's conversation there. Is there a good way to embed a preview of the conversation, or something like that?

My goal is of course conversation, but more specifically, conversation with a more specific community. I'm not looking for general-purpose, entire-Internet comments like Disqus provides.

So, what do you think? Is this even a valid use case for Cake?

    • Good questions!

I could duplicate the first couple paragraphs of my blog post and then "read more at [link]" but that somehow seems un-Cake-like.

We've seen some people doing this. We've also heard from a few people that they consider this a little spammy. I think it ultimately depends on the context and the intent: is the goal really to start a high quality conversation on Cake, or is it just to promote your content on another website?

If the goal is just to share a link to another site, then Twitter or Facebook would probably be a better place for that. But if the goal is to spark a real discussion on Cake, and if there's enough interesting content in your Cake post to make an interesting discussion possible, then that's probably okay. Especially if your blog post itself links to Cake and encourages people to discuss it here.

We think Cake could be a great place for people to have in-depth conversations about blog posts, tweets, etc. I think it all comes down to the quality of the content. If it's interesting, people will converse. ๐Ÿ™‚

Is there a good way to embed a preview of the conversation, or something like that?

Cake provides standard Open Graph metadata for conversations, so when you share a Cake conversation link on Facebook or Twitter, it will automatically embed a nice preview of the conversation with an image (if available). If your blog software supports Open Graph embeds this should work there too, but as far as I know this isn't common in blog software.

    • Thanks Ryan for the feedback! I'm still figuring things out here, but I posted another thread on General Magic stuff to try out the cross-linking concept. I attempted to make the Cake thread self-contained enough that it's not just a link to my site, but can legitimately stand alone here.

I appreciate that Cake isn't just a link aggregator (like Reddit, Hacker News) or tied to my in-person network (like Facebook) or just snippets of conversation without any depth (like Twitter). I much prefer the medium-form style of discussion that appears to be the norm on Cake, combined with the good-natured community!

    You've been invited!
