Like Dr Fauci said - if you mandate masks, who are going to be the mask police - exactly? Fines for not wearing masks were used to some extent in 1918, but there was certainly no Federal mask requirement. Maybe there should have been.
Dr. Fauci asked a very good question.
Who are going to be willing to be mask police? Maybe police officers who have already been infected with SARS Cov 2 and fully recovered, and hopefully, safe from reinfection ??? What are the risks to the enforcers of dealing with people who are not convinced of the necessity for masks - some of whom react very agressively. We have all seen the videos of individuals, both male and female, throwing groceries on the floor, spitting and coughing actively at other members of the public - are they to be prosecuted for a felonious crime? Maybe?
SWAT teams for mask non-wearers. I am sure there are members of the public who might find that appealing, and maybe a bit funny, and indeed, warranted. Until someone gets hurt very badly. Which seems more than just possible.
We do need to answer this question, because it is a question that will not disappear after this pandemic moderates. We, as a society, need to decide what kind of behavioural responces we require of citizens in public spaces, in the midst of this and future pandemics.
We have all seen the videos of men and women reacting violently when asked/ requested to wear masks. Do we as a society really want to come down heavy on these people? Heavy fines, jail time, quarantined at home time?
If masks are only ~ 15 - 65% effective when worn correctly, they are certainly not a replacement for social distancing and avoiding crowded areas indoors, and outside.
I suspect if there were really good answers to these questions, we would already be enforcing them.
I will say that I understand the reluctance of many to wear a mask. Wearing a mask in surgery, in a cool dry climate for a couple hours where one is not physically working very hard, is fairly easy to put up with. Wearing a heavy mask all day long at work in a hot humid environment, sweat dripping in your eyes, without any down time, is much more distasteful. Not touching the mask while wearing one in those conditions, hot, sweaty, humid, is even more challenging.
Watch the TV reporters in their short video clips shot outside - it is almost impossible for them to offer a brief 3-5 minute report without having to adjust their masks, several times,. to keep them from sliding down off their noses. Now their hands are potentially contaminated as they grab the mike again....
This pandemic is tiresome and not near over yet. Indeed, it may wll become endemic, and never really go away until active vaccination is available. Hopefully, it does not mutate to a more lethal form in the meantime.......
I am certain Dr Fauci saw most of this coming last January; he knew this was not simply going away soon. Flattening the curve, merely delayed, but did not deter, the passage of the viral flood, through the population.
One can only imagine what is occurring in many other countries around the world, especially those in the tropics, with little to no serious health care facilities. And not caught on phone and surveillance cameras.
