I've been wanting to write this post for a while now but decided to wait until after Apple's WWDC event for confirmation. So now I want to ask, why is everyone obsessed with dark mode?
Apple even thought it was necessary to do a demo around iOS to show off dark mode like it's some magical innovation that hasn't been done before.
I've tried out dark mode on my OnePlus 5T several times, changing the system theme and apps I use to dark mode, forcing myself to use my phone that way for an entire day to see if I like it. I don't. Dark themes aesthetically look unwelcoming to me, and I don't believe any battery saving from dark themes will significantly affect my phone's battery life which already lasts all day.
That's not to say that I don't like dark theme's at all, I do, just not system wide, and only in certain apps in certain use cases. Telegram has a dark theme that turns on automatically when you're in a dark environment. Google Maps automatically toggles the dark theme as well when you're driving at night. Twitter has somewhat of a dark theme, though it needs to be toggled manually. In all these cases, I'd much rather use the light themes during the day and only use the dark themes at night or in a dark environment.
So where do you stand? Are you excited that both Android and iOS will natively support system-wide dark mode? Or are you like me, and you really couldn't care less about system-wide dark modes as long as the apps you use have an automatic dark mode?
