Turns out, my imagination exceeds my ability to explain things in words.

Like how do you explain something like this anyways?

    • vonwong

Anyways, I've been trying to explain that I wanted to make a vortex out of straws... but all attempts to explain what was in my head just never went through.

Neat! So the goal is to build a full-scale version of this and, I assume, take some awesome photos? That should be cool!

    • vonwong

      Sorta.

The goal is to build a full scale installation... so that OTHERS can take photos of their own. That way I can scale my photography!

I would call this playdough model a great example of "prototyping in real life". Sometimes I get jealous about playing with something tangible instead of pushing pixels on the screen 🤣

I assume the doll there is for scale?
What kind of materials are you planning on using for this installation?
What color and paint would you choose?

    • vonwong

The human in there is hopefully to scale (more or less). Theoretically it would live in a starbucks in Vietnam for a couple months... then I'd ship it to it's next home. Make money on the renting of them I think?

yah doll is there for scale.

haven't figured out the material part... this is the part where I take this to a fabricator and say: Yo. I want to do this thing. how?

The "toothpicks" are gonna be straws. 100,000 of them more or less.
I'm hoping the base material can be recycled plastic bags that I iron/press together. Ideally the whole thing would be translucent.

Props to you for doing this. Very inspiring.

When you're planning the full-scale build, be sure to think through packing logistics including getting it through the Starbucks and other showroom doors. Shipping could easily be your biggest expense, even with proper planning. But, if anyone can figure it out, it's Von Wong.
