• Includes: eliminating carbon pollution from power plants by 2035, net-zero emissions for all new buildings by 2030 and energy-saving upgrades to 4 million buildings in five years.
• Shaved *15 years* off Biden’s previous target for 100% clean energy.
• Carbon removal features prominently in the R&D section of the Biden-Sanders unity task force climate recs.
• It calls for a "presidential net-negative emissions moonshot" and greater R&D in carbon capture paired with geologic storage
Here’s an initial analysis of the plan from RL Miller, DNC Delegate and founder of climatehawksvote.com:
Biden-Bernie Unity Task Force recommendations. Link here, pages 1-6 and 42-55.
First, lots of good things in it. As a Democrat, I agree that all clean energy jobs should be union jobs. Small startup solar companies will hate that, but sustainability involves sustainable people.
Second. Let's talk solar, 🌞 specifically the call for 500 million new panels.
That is the Hillary Clinton platform plank of 2016.
I am not making that up.
Seriously, Biden/ Bernie Unity Task Force?
Things have happened since 2016. Science-y things. Big scary wildfire things. Hurricane things. Trumpy things. And you can't update from the 2016 Hillary Clinton platform?
Next, cars. The Biden-Bernie Unity Task Force, shorter: let's get with California and figure things out.
Nothing specific about CAFE standards. Nothing.
IMO single biggest breakthrough in climate policy thinking was Jay Inslee's call for 100 percent clean cars. In fact, I begged California officials from Eric Garcetti to Henry Stern and more to turn it into state law. Now Biden is basically going back to 2008.
Some good language regarding buses, cash4clunkers, etc.
But Biden/ Bernie won't call for a bold CAFE standard.
