I agree with him. My neighborhood is crawling with autonomous cars. I don't even recognize what companies they're from but I see at least a dozen a day while out running or driving around. They've been here for years and all the neighbors are completely at ease with them, much more so than with human-driven cars. I don't know about the neighbors, but my mindset changes when I see them on the freeway. I know they're safe in residential neighborhoods but it just feels scary on the freeway.
The other day a jogger was hit in the dark just a block from my house. No one knows how it happened. All the neighbors were talking about it, but no one even considered it was a self-driving car that did it. We were all guessing distracted driver, maybe drunk, speeding, poor night vision, whatever — human frailties.
