A remarkable story from the New York Times about how New York City dealt with a number of small pox cases in 1947 - I did not realize small pox was still even present in the US in 1947.
Quite a story - The city vaccinated 6 million New Yorkers in less than 30 days - without asking the Governor of New York for permission, or asking the Federal government for any aid.
The city's health commissioner, Israel Weinstein MD Ph.D decided it was imperative to abort a full blown small pox epidemic and with the mayor's backing proceeded to carry it out. Dr. Weinstein was right, small pox would have killed thousands without vaccination in New York alone. The initial case from Mexico, had ostensibly been vaccinated too...........
Life was simpler back then..... I notice that the intial case route went right across much of the USA, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York....
