On Tuesday, another #1 ranked college basketball team lost on their home floor. Last time it was Kentucky losing to Evansville. This time it was Duke, who lost in overtime to Stephen F. Austin by a final score 85-83. It was Duke’s first loss on their home floor (Cameron Indoor Stadium) to an unranked non-power five conference school since January 5, 1983.
These small schools are showing no fear going into these storied basketball arenas and shocking the world, which is just awesome! I know everyone tunes out college basketball until March, but there really are fun college basketball games happening throughout the season!
What makes this win so impressive is the fact that Stephen F. Austin pulled this out in overtime. It would have been very easy for them to give up and say there’s no way they win in overtime on the Duke campus, but instead, they continued to battle and literally played until the final buzzer. I think it was cool this game ended on a fastbreak layup. It just goes to show the importance of fundamentals. Nathan Bain, who made the game-winning layup, has seen a spike in donations to his Go Fund Me to help his family rebuild from Hurricane Dorian. All in all, a feel good story!
