I haven’t even heard about the kakapo birds until now, but apparently they’re these flightless parrots that are native to New Zealand. When settlers brought mammals to New Zealand, things really went south for these unique birds. In the mid-90s, an initiative was started to help bring them back and now, after nearly going extinct, kakapos are starting to make a rebound by being given safe havens to live in, free of predators. Due to their poor fertility rates, artificial insemination has also played a role in boosting their numbers. Pretty cool!
